Nude Balzac Finest US Lost Wax Bronze Sculpture Statue by A. Rodin

$2,500.00

In 1891, Rodin received a commission from the Societe des Gens de,Lettres, a literary society, for a monument honoring the great 19th-century writer Honore de Balzac (1799-1850). He often began his sculptures by making nude studies such as this. Rodin’s first idea was to represent Balzac in middle age, when he (like Rodin) was at the height of his creative power. This study of a powerful, broad-bellied, middle aged man was made relatively early in the monument’s process of development. The mass of metal between the figure’s legs is a casting of the remaining clay left from the molding of the figure, indicating that the figure was never intended to be considered for the final monument. Dimensions: 26″H x 14″L.

Description

Auguste Rodin born in 1917, was one of the most influential sculptors of the 19th century. His innovative modeling technique and unconventional, often provocative subject matter earned him praise as the greatest sculptor since Michelangelo. Going against academic tradition, Rodin created highly expressive sculptures of the human body in his quest to convey such universal emotions as love, longing, reverie and despair.
