Pierre Jules Mene was born in Paris in 1871 into a prosperous artisan family. He learned his art from his father and went on to earn four medals at the Salon and major exhibitions, receiving the Cross of the Legion d’Honneur in 1861. He became the most prolific, successful, important and influential animalier of his time.
