Semiramis Finest Lost Wax Bronze Sculpture by Chiparus ~ Life-Size

$9,750.00 price_excluding_tax

Semiramis is the mythical queen of King Ninus of Assyria, who succeeded him to the throne after his death. Legends depict her as an effective and strong ruler, extending the borders of her kingdom, and erecting many grand monuments during her reign. This bronze figure (c. 1928) depicts Semiramis standing on tiptoe in an exotic dancing costume, arms spread wide, with a magnificent cape which cascades to the floor. One of the most beautiful and elaborate works of art by the master of Art Deco, Demetre Chiparus.

Dimensions: 70″H x 17″L x 59″W. All dimensions are approximate. Also available without cape.

The figure perches on a bronze base, perfectly embodying the spirit and aesthetic of the Art Deco era, and is a wonderful example of its creator’s genius. Chiparus (1886-1947) was born in Romania, educated in Italy, and took up residence in Paris in 1912, attending the Ecole des Beaux Arts. During the 1920s, he perfected the technique of combining bronze and ivory, known as ‘chryselephantine’, and employed this method in his work, quickly rising to fame and great commercial success. His sculptures are remarkable for their highly decorative nature, detailed craftsmanship, and the long, slender, stylized appearance of his figures. His favorite subjects were ballet dancers, the French theatre, and early motion pictures.

Color Choices – The standard way we usually cast and finish many of our sculptures is with what we refer to as multi-color patina. Our bronze sculpture selection may also be customized in a number of fire-applied patinas, such as classic French Brown, Verdigris, Italian Green as well as other custom finish options. All bronze statuary will develop a natural patina when left in natures elements. The aged patina on bronzes is often desired, but can be prevented by care and cleaning of the bronze statue by applying beeswax or other polish to prevent a patina from forming. Color selection is more a matter of customer preference.
