The Barbedienne foundry was created in Paris in 1838 by Ferdinand Barbedienne and Achille Collas. After 1859, Ferdinand was its sole owner. The company had grown to 300 workers and Ferdinand was successful in obtaining contracts with foremost French sculptors. The Franco-Prussian war however interrupted verifiably all sculpture production, in order to make available the necessary materials for making cannons and cannon balls. After the war, the foundry returned to casting sculpture and acquired more than a hundred models from Antoine-Louis Barye’s sale of 1876. Ferdinand died in 1891. Thereafter Gustave Leblanc, who continued in charge until 1952, ran the foundry that stoped its activity two years later.
